‘Career offender’ sentenced for drug dealing after woman’s body found in Michigan home

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A 46-year-old from Kalamazoo will spend the next three decades in federal prison for drug trafficking.

Officials describe Keith Smith as a “career offender” with a criminal history that included 10 prior felony convictions, more than half of which for dealing drugs.

According to authorities, a search warrant was executed at Smith’s home in 2022 after he sold a pound of methamphetamine to a confidential informant. The search uncovered the body of a woman who had overdosed and more than four pounds of methamphetamine.

A search of Smith’s car led to the discovery of fentanyl, cocaine, and a stolen gun.

Smith was charged and released on bond and reportedly continued to deal drugs. Police reportedly caught him in January 2025 with more than 13 pounds of methamphetamine.

On Friday, Sept. 19, Smith was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
