Nearly 50 guns smuggled from US seized in Windsor bust

Raid uncovers large amount of firearms and parts

WINDSOR, Ontario – Authorities in Canada have seized 48 guns, dozens of gun parts and thousands of bullets that were smuggled into the country from the United States.

According to authorities, officers with the Canada Border Services Agency in Windsor and Montreal intercepted four packages from the United States this spring that contained gun parts and tools for manufacturing guns. All four packages were addressed to the same location in Windsor.

On July 17, a search warrant was executed at the Windsor location. Law enforcement reportedly seized 48 firearms, 30 prohibited auto sears used to convert semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic machine guns, various firearm parts, 175 magazines -- 104 of which were prohibited, including four 50-round drum magazines -- and roughly 17,000 rounds of ammunition.

Windsor resident Hengwei Zhong, 30, was arrested and charged with smuggling a controlled or regulated device, smuggling a prohibited device, unauthorized importation of a prohibited device, attempt to manufacture a firearm, two counts of possession of a prohibited device without a license, three counts of improper storage of a firearm, and three counts of possession of a firearm at a place other than indicated on a license.
