Michigan lawmakers send budget extension to Governor’s desk, ending brief government shutdown

Michigan to resume operations as normal

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan House and Senate wrapped up sessions early Wednesday morning, shortly before 2 a.m., to get something on Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s desk to end a government shutdown.

Michigan’s House and Senate passed a seven-day extension of the previous budget, hoping to finalize a deal next week that will fund the state through the new fiscal year.

At 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, the State Government technically shut down as Oct. 1 marks the start of the fiscal year and lawmakers had yet to pass a budget, which is normally done over the summer. The shutdown then ended as soon as lawmakers sent the budget extension.

According to Whitmer, state lawmakers are close to finalizing a deal.
