Road to recovery: 9-year-old Macomb County girl opens up after car crashes into bedroom

Driver charged with reckless driving causing serious injury, failure to stop at the scene of a crash

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A car crashed into a Center Line home early Monday morning, driving through a girl’s bedroom. It hit her so hard that she landed in the front yard.

Laila Breitshtrus was sleeping in bed inside a home just south of 10 Mile Road and east of Van Dyke Avenue on Oct. 13 when the vehicle smashed through the wall and into her room.

Neighbors heard the loud crash just before 3 a.m. and rushed outside to find the scene.

One neighbor said the woman driving the car ran off on foot after the crash and nearly ran into him while fleeing.

The SUV ended up inside Laila’s bedroom, and the impact was so severe that she and her bed were thrown out of the room and into the yard.

Center Line police reported Laila suffered multiple injuries, including to her spine, nose, and a laceration to her liver.

A relative started a GoFundMe page to support her recovery.

In the adjacent bedroom, a baby was sleeping in a crib.

Police said the driver missed hitting the infant by just four feet.

The 20-year-old driver, identified as Caris Adell Wade, was located a short distance away after at least one neighbor chased her.

Wade was charged with reckless driving causing serious injury and failure to stop at the scene of a crash.

Additional charges may be filed depending on the results of a toxicology test.

Wade’s bond was set at $200,000.

Local 4’s Nick Monacelli caught up with Laila about the recovery she has ahead. You can watch the full story in the video at the beginning of this article.
