The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), partnering with nearly 4,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide, is holding the 29th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day today, Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event encourages Americans to safely and anonymously dispose of expired, unused, or unnecessary prescription medications at nearly 4,000 collection sites across the country.

This effort aims to reduce prescription drug misuse and prevent accidental overdoses and poisonings.

“Prescription drugs may be legal, but they are still powerful — and can present significant risk to those in your household,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi.

Since its inception in 2010, the Take Back Day has collected more than 20 million pounds of unused medications, providing an accessible way for Americans to safely clear out their homes.

In Michigan, Ohio, and northern Kentucky alone, over 470 collection sites will participate.

The DEA will accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other prescription drug forms, but will not collect syringes, sharps, illicit drugs, or liquids like cough syrup unless sealed in their original containers.

If you cannot participate on Oct. 25, permanent drop boxes are available year-round at nearly 16,500 pharmacies, hospitals, businesses, and police departments. You can find those locations here.
