SNAP benefits paused in Michigan for November

State health officials announced that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will be paused in November.

“Due to the ongoing federal government funding lapse, there may be limited availability of funds,” the Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service said in directing MDHHS to hold November payments.

SNAP is the largest food assistance program in the country, and nearly 13% of households in Michigan depend on them. That’s about 1.4 million people.

Gleaners Community Food Bank

Monthly, Gleaners hosts drive-up food distributions, which are free and open to the public. These are at different locations. Anyone in need of food is encouraged to attend and will receive over 35 pounds of nutritious groceries, like milk, fresh fruit, vegetables, lean protein, and other shelf-stable items while supplies last.

Forgotten Harvest Food Pantry

Throughout the month, Forgotten Harvest operates mobile pantries throughout metro Detroit. They have set locations depending on the day, so go to their website to find out where they will be & confirm their operating hours

Fish & Loaves Pantry

Fish & Loaves hosts a “Saturday Fresh Market” with the goal of providing fresh produce to those in need throughout the community. This program is held on Saturday (except the 3rd Saturday of the month) from 9am-12pm.

Individuals or families in need, regardless of residency or income, are able to visit the drive-thru and receive 20-25 pounds of fresh produce and dairy.
