Adult recess club brings wellness, play to Metro Detroit

Twice-monthly meetups offer screen-free socializing, outdoor activities

Remember when recess was the best part of the school day?

A new community meetup is bringing that playful spirit back to adults across Metro Detroit.

The “Recess Club,” organized by wellness advocate Melissa Coulier, offers twice-monthly gatherings designed to help adults disconnect from technology and reconnect with both nature and each other.

“Being in nature is important for healing,” says Coulier, who coordinates meetups within a 60-mile radius around Detroit to help participants explore different areas of Michigan.

The club’s simple concept -- gathering outdoors to move and socialize --- has already created meaningful connections among participants.

“It’s a great opportunity to spend time with friends and meet new people,” says Alex May, a regular participant. “They showed up, and I have three friends.”

For Coulier, who is married to Michigan native and actor Dave Coulier, the initiative stems from personal wellness practices.

“Every day we take a walk after dinner with the dogs. It’s having that exhale after a long day,” she said.

The benefits extend beyond physical activity.

May notes that participants “definitely feel healthier, lighter,” adding that daily movement is essential for well-being.

The club emphasizes unstructured play and social interaction, reminiscent of childhood recess but tailored for adults.

“We can’t underestimate the power of walking around the block, googling a trail, and getting out with your family and friends,” Coulier says.

She emphasizes that the club’s appeal lies in its simplicity -- doing things for fun without an agenda while taking a break from technology.

The Recess Club welcomes new members, with meetups occurring at various locations throughout the Metro Detroit area.
