Stolen vehicle chase ends in deadly crash

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A 16-year-old boy was bound over to circuit court for a crash that killed a father working in Macomb County.

Alex Habib, 28, was driving for Uber on July 12, 2025, when he was struck by a vehicle fleeing Roseville police officers.

Habib died from his injuries, leaving behind a 1-year-old daughter, a 3-month-old son, and his wife.

Prosecutors allege Daniel Shane Canales was driving a stolen Hyundai Sonata when officers attempted to pull him over near I-94 and Gratiot Avenue.

Police said the driver didn’t stop, and they pursued him onto westbound I-696, then onto Hoover Road, and then onto 11 Mile Road.

Roseville police said the fleeing driver ignored a red light at the intersection of 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue and crashed into a Ford Fusion being driven by Habib.

Habib died at the hospital from his injuries.

Canales was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license, third-degree fleeing and eluding and unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle.

He was denied bond and remains lodged at a juvenile detention center in Mount Clemens.

On Monday, Nov. 4, 2025, the preliminary examination for Canales ended with the judge bounding him over to circuit court on all charges. He will be arraigned Nov. 17.
