List: Key races in Metro Detroit for 2025 general election

Metro Detroiters will head to the polls on Tuesday to vote for their next mayor, city council members, and various proposals.

Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield and Pastor Solomon Kinloch Jr. won the August primary election and are the two candidates on the November ballot for Detroit’s next mayor.

Current Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced in 2024 that he would not seek re-election. Instead, he is running as an Independent candidate for Michigan’s next governor.

The candidates running for Hamtramck mayor are Adam Alharbi and Muhith Mahmood.

Dick Cheney, one of the most powerful and polarizing vice presidents in US history, dies at 84

Dick Cheney, the hard-charging conservative who became one of the most powerful and polarizing vice presidents in U.S. history and a leading advocate for the invasion of Iraq, has died at age 84.

Cheney died Monday night due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, his family said in a statement.

“For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming’s Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States,” the statement said. ”Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”

‘Pumpkin’ code word in WhatsApp chats revealed timing for foiled Dearborn terror attack, FBI says

Two men have been arraigned on charges in connection with allegedly planning a terrorist attack in Michigan, which was thwarted by the FBI.

New court documents have revealed more details about the alleged plan, including information about encrypted chats in which the word “pumpkin” was used several times.

Federal officials believe the suspects used this word in reference to Halloween, the day they had picked to carry out their attack.

Why prosecutors say a Macomb County businessman was targeted for murder

Prosecutors have revealed what they believe is the motive for the attempted murder of a Macomb County businessman.

Eddie Jawad was targeted outside his mansion on Oct. 14 and was shot as he drove his SUV outside his garage. He was grazed in his right leg and struck in his left leg, and also suffered injuries from broken glass. He was released from the hospital later that same day.

Authorities revealed that two of the three people charged in the crime used to work for Jawad. They believe the shooting was an attempt to cover up thousands of dollars embezzled from him

Weather: Mix of sun, clouds expected in Metro Detroit on Election Day

A chillier start to your day as most areas are waking up to temperatures in the 30s.

Quiet weather ensues on this election day with a mix of sun and clouds. We will still have a slight breeze, but temperatures will rebound to either side of 60 degrees for afternoon highs.

Keep your eyes to the sky this evening. Known as both the Beaver Moon and the Harvest Moon, tonight’s full moon will actually be a supermoon, but not just any supermoon. This is expected to be the biggest and brightest of the year.

The best viewing time will be this evening and tomorrow shortly after sunset when it rises above the eastern horizon.
