Upper Peninsula man jailed on $1M bond in child sexual abuse case

Suspect accused of using alcohol and drugs to lure victims

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – A 75-year-old Upper Peninsula man is facing felony charges after allegedly sexually abusing children.

Police believe Gerard Malkowski would provide children with alcohol, marijuana and cigarettes to make them feel comfortable before sexually assaulting them.

According to authorities, the abuse dates back to 2009, with the investigation starting after a tip was received by Michigan State Police in April 2025.

Police searched his DeTour Township home, located about 40 miles south of Sault Ste. Marie, where they seized digital evidence and a gun. He was taken into custody on Oct. 29.

On Oct. 31, Malkowski was charged with four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and felon in possession of a firearm. He remains lodged at the Chippewa County Jail on a one-million-dollar bond.

Police believe there could be more victims.
