Michigan boy dies after being hit by car while checking mailbox, police say

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. – A 10-year-old Michigan boy died after a car struck him while he was crossing the street after checking the mailbox, police said.

The pedestrian crash happened just after 8 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025, in the 72000 block of 22nd Street in Porter Township, which is located in Van Buren County, on the southwest side of the state.

Van Buren County deputies and EMS responded and immediately began to provide medical aid.

Authorities say that a Mattawan Consolidated Schools bus was heading northbound on 22nd Street and getting ready to stop to pick up a student when the boy was hit by a white SUV.

The SUV driver, identified as a 38-year-old woman, told authorities that she hit the child, who was crossing the street after checking his family’s mailbox, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.

She immediately called 911.

The boy was taken to a local hospital, and later in the afternoon on Thursday, the sheriff’s office released an update and said the boy had died from his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing. No other information is being released at this time.
