Michigan mom thankful after Sterling Heights officer saves choking baby at Walmart

Officer Edwar Talia saved 5-month-old baby

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A Michigan mom is thankful after her baby’s life was saved by a Sterling Heights police officer who acted quickly when the infant started choking on milk.

The incident happened on Nov. 1 during what was supposed to be a simple trip to Walmart.

The day took a terrifying turn when Bayley Simon’s baby, Jameson, suddenly stopped breathing and turned blue.

“It felt like forever. It really did feel like time stood still,” Bayley said. “It happened so fast, but in the moment you’re in such a panic it felt like hours.”

Thanks to Sterling Heights Police Officer Edwar Talia, Jameson is now doing great.

Officer Talia used his training to clear the baby’s airway after he choked on breast milk.

“It just so happens that he was there for another reason, but he was a hero,” Bayley said. “He swooped in and made sure he did what he had to do to make sure he was okay.”

Bayley, who lives in Holland but is originally from Madison Heights, was shopping at Walmart for a baby shower and never expected her day to take such a sharp turn.

She had undergone chemotherapy for lupus and was told she might not be able to have children, making the moment even more shocking when her miracle baby’s life was at risk.

Officer Talia’s quick thinking ensured Jameson was safe and back in her arms.

“He is thriving. Obviously, he likes to play and show off his cool tricks. We’re learning how to crawl, hitting all the milestones. Thank God no brain damage. He’s doing everything he should be doing,” Bayley said.

Officer Talia wasn’t the only one who stepped up to help baby Jameson. Several others jumped in, doing everything they could to save him. Bayley says she will always be thankful.
