According to authorities, the driver of a 2011 Chevrolet Impala was heading southbound with his 2-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter when they crossed over into the northbound lanes. One northbound vehicle was able to swerve out of the way, but the car behind it was struck head-on.
The driver of the northbound car, an 18-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, as was the Impala’s driver. The 2-year-old boy is expected to survive.
A 5-year-old girl, first reported to be a 3-year-old, died at the scene.
After several days of investigation, Michigan State Police now believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Troopers are awaiting medical examiner reports, lab results and further interviews before submitting their report to the prosecutor’s office.
