Macomb County man in critical condition after hitting utility pole; medical emergency suspected

Heart attack may have caused 71-year-old to lose control, officials say

BRUCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A man is in critical condition after hitting a utility pole in Macomb County on Friday, and officials believe a medical emergency may have caused the driver to lose control of his car.

The crash happened just before 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, on northbound M-53 near 35 Mile Road in Bruce Township.

The driver of a Jeep Cherokee, identified as a 71-year-old Washington Township man, allegedly drifted off the roadway to the right, went into the ditch and then hit a utility pole, according to Michigan State Police.

When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found the man unresponsive with a weak pulse. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Police say medical personnel believe the man had a heart attack, which caused him to lose control of his car.
