Round One: Light Snow Accumulation
DETROIT – Light snow moves in this morning with possible freezing drizzle leading into the early afternoon. This will be round 1 and fizzling out by noon. However, freezing drizzle can’t be ruled out early this afternoon. Otherwise, a lull until after sunset.
Snowfall totals from this morning‘s event will be between a dusting up to 2″. Trace ice accumulations will also be possible this afternoon. Highs rise slightly above freezing with wind gusts upward of 25 MPH.
Round Two: Rain/Snow Mix
Round two will be the messier system. Snow returns in the evening, likely after 8 p.m., transitioning to a rain/snow mix or rain overnight for portions of SE MI through Wednesday morning.
Because round two stays mainly snow in the thumb, a winter weather advisory has been issued for the Thumb region starting at 10 p.m. until 4 p.m. Wednesday. Snow totals up there will be between 3 to 5 inches from this evening through tomorrow.
It is worth noting that the rain/snow line is highly sensitive which makes forecasting snow totals across the Metro area tricky. It will be blustery with gusts up to 30 MPH and temperatures will fall into Wednesday morning where a re-freeze will be a concern.
Colder End to the Week
There will be chances for lake effect flurries each day start Thursday through the weekend. We will also get another arctic blast over the weekend with single digit lows and the potential for sub-zero morning wind chills.
