LENAWEE COUNTY, Mich. – The detective who was in charge of the investigation into Dee Warner’s murder is accused of fleeing Michigan to avoid providing testimony in trial.
Retired Lenawee County detective Kevin Greca is a material witness in the trial against Dale Warner, according to court records.
Greca retired in August 2024. The Lenawee County sheriff said he was the detective in charge of the investigation in the Dee Warner murder case.
Dale is accused of murdering his wife, Dee, who disappeared in April 2021. Her remains were found on the family’s property more than three years later.
Dale was charged with open murder and tampering with evidence in the death of his wife. His trial is expected to begin Jan. 27, 2026.
Greca was taken into custody last week by U.S. Marshals in Ohio after a bench warrant was issued for his arrest in October.
Prosecutors claim Greca left Michigan to avoid testifying. It’s not clear why.
The Lenawee County sheriff confirmed with Local 4 that deputy sheriffs were trying to serve subpoenas to Greca but were unsuccessful.
He said it’s not normal for a Material Witness Detainer to be issued to come back and testify for a case in which a deputy was involved.
“The need for a detainer should not be necessary; returning to testify as needed is the right thing to do,” the sheriff told Local 4. “This could have been avoided had Greca simply made himself available for subpoena service on the multiple attempts by our Deputies.”
During a bond hearing on Dec. 17, Greca’s attorney claimed that he was not trying to flee Michigan. Instead, she said he was in Toledo for dinner when the order was filed.
Prosecutors then said they had been trying to find him for eight months and claimed Greca had been in Ohio for some time.
Greca is now out on bond.
