Competency exam ordered for Utica man accused of stabbing wife to death during custody exchange

Family believes death was preventable

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A competency evaluation has been ordered for a 25-year-old man accused of stabbing his estranged wife to death at a Shelby Township gas station.

During Sidney Emmanuel Davis, Jr.’s probable cause conference on Tuesday, Dec. 16, the court referred him to the Center for Forensic Psychiatry for an evaluation regarding his competency to stand trial.

Davis was charged with first-degree murder after reportedly beating and stabbing 23-year-old Fatme Davis during a custody exchange on Sept. 21. She died from her injuries.

Their 1-year-old son was in her car at the time.

A review hearing for Sidney Davis’ competency is scheduled for Jan. 29, 2026.

If convicted, he faces the possibility of life in prison.
