ROSEVILLE, Mich. – Roseville police officers made a surprise Christmas visit to the two young sons of missing mother Ashley Elkins on Monday evening, surprising the family with toys, a ceremonial key to the city, and a personal visit with Santa Claus, as her loved ones mark the first holiday without her.
The gesture was aimed at lifting the spirits of 11-year-old Braden and 8-year-old Jaden Bogan-Elkins, who were 10 and 7-years-old, respectively, when their mother disappeared in early January.
Sergeant Matt Lesperance, a Roseville police officer involved in the case, said officers wanted to shed some light on the family after such a difficult year.
“I’m sure after all the turmoil they went through, just to put a little light in their hearts goes a long way, especially for the young kids,” Lesperance said.
Lieutenant Eric Saddler, another Roseville officer who helped investigate the case, said the department wanted to show community support beyond their investigative work.
“It’s just a great feeling, and there’s nothing better than to give, especially for people in need in times like this,” Saddler said. “It holds a very special place in our hearts.”
Ashley Elkins was last seen the morning of Jan. 2, arriving at the apartment of her ex-boyfriend, Deandre Booker.
Booker has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and tampering with evidence, among other charges, in connection with her disappearance. Elkins’ body still hasn’t been found.
Elkins’ mother, Monika Elkins, said the department’s continued outreach has been a comfort.
“I know their mom is smiling from heaven, and they deserve this; they need to know that everybody loves them and that they support them and us,” Elkins said.
“This is what we’re supposed to do this time of year: embrace each other, love each other, let families know they’re not forgotten,” said Maurice Morton, Elkins’ uncle. “What they did today, Roseville Police, is absolutely amazing.”
After Booker’s preliminary exam in August, a judge decided to delay ruling on whether to send the case to trial to review additional evidence.
The case still hasn’t been bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court.
