Wisconsin man dies after snowmobile leaves trail, hits wooden post in Michigan

GOGEBIC COUNTY, Mich. – A Wisconsin man died after his snowmobile left a trail and struck a wooden post in Michigan, police said.

Michigan State Police troopers from the Wakefield Post and Gogebic County deputies responded to Trail 2 in Bessemer Township at about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025, after receiving a report of a crash.

Authorities discovered that a 61-year-old man from Luxemburg, Wisconsin, was driving a snowmobile eastbound on Trail 2 when he left the trail, lost control and crashed into a wooden post.

Emergency medical aid was administered at the scene, but the 61-year-old died from his injuries.

Drugs and alcohol don’t appear to be factors in the crash, police said.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this loss,” said Lt. Ben Eckola, MSP Eighth District Public Information Officer. “MSP was assisted by the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan DNR, Beacon Ambulance, Bessemer Township Fire Department, and Gogebic County Victim’s Services.”
