GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Newly released body camera footage shows Genesee County sheriff’s deputies rushing into thick smoke and breaking windows to rescue survivors during a deadly attack at a Grand Blanc Township church in September.
The footage, obtained from the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, captures the harrowing moments as first responders arrived at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where an assailant rammed a pickup truck through the front doors and set the building on fire.
“Can anyone hear us in there?” deputies can be heard shouting as they broke windows to create escape routes.
Deputies also crawled on hands and knees through the smoke-filled church, searching for survivors until conditions became too dangerous.
“We went in there. We couldn’t get more than 10 or 15 feet,” one deputy reported to the sheriff at the scene.
Deputies trained as medics worked rapidly to treat survivors, laying out medical supplies on the ground as they brought victims to safety.
The FBI confirmed in October that the attack was a targeted act of violence against the Mormon faith. Four people died in the attack and several others were hurt.
