How ‘grandma hobbies’ benefit your brain

Activities like knitting, gardening, crosswords can help lower risk of dementia, researchers say

Looking for a way to relax in this new year that could also be good for your brain? How about trying “grandma hobbies?”

“Grandma hobbies” are slow, hands-on, creative activities bringing calm and mindfulness. This can be knitting, gardening, sudoku, crossword puzzles and even baking sourdough bread.

It’s not just about relaxation. Learning new skills like deciphering the New York Times crossword or trying to figure out why your apple cinnamon loaf isn’t rising the way it should is helping your brain, boosting memory and thinking skills.

Research shows that regularly engaging in these activities can lower the risk of dementia.

Dr. Ashhar Ali, a neurologist with Henry Ford Health, joined Local 4 Live to talk more about “grandma hobbies.” You can watch the full interview at the beginning of this article.
