STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Five people were injured when gunfire erupted at a house party early Saturday morning in Sterling Heights, police said.
Two suspects opened fire on each other during the incident, which occurred just before 1:30 a.m. at a residence near East 14 Mile and Ryan Road.
Both shooters were among those wounded in the exchange.
Three bystanders were also struck by gunfire during the incident.
Four victims were transported to local hospitals by emergency responders, while a fifth person drove herself to seek medical treatment.
Sterling Heights police officers likely saved one victim’s life by quickly applying a tourniquet to stop severe bleeding from a leg wound.
“It was scary, everyone was sleeping and we woke up and we got scared,” said Multazim Chowdhury, a neighbor who was awakened by the gunfire.
Residents reported hearing arguments followed by gunshots. “We heard screaming, two people were arguing with each other,” another witness told reporters.
The typically quiet neighborhood was shocked by the violence.
“Normally this is a safe neighborhood, nothing happened before. This is kind of the first time we heard something like that,” Chowdhury added.
Both suspects remain in police custody while receiving treatment at the hospital.
All five victims are currently in stable condition.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Sterling Heights Police at 586-446-2825.
