How a record-breaking drive on a frozen Lake St. Clair helped create Ford Motor Company

The current fastest speed achieved by a vehicle on land was set in 1997.

Andy Green, a former Wing Commander with the British Royal Air Force, drove the ThrustSSC through the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, where he reached a speed of more than 763 mph -- roughly four football fields a second. To this day, the ThrustSSC remains the first and only land vehicle to break the sound barrier.

Henry Ford’s first automobile, 1896’s Quadricycle, had two gears -- one for speeds up to 10 mph and one for speeds of up to 20 mph.

Oakland County couple stranded after truck stuck in dealership for over a month due to part delay

A 79-year-old Clarkston man says he’s been without his Chevrolet Silverado for over a month because the dealership that is servicing the truck can’t get the part it needs. He bought the truck because it fit his wife’s wheelchair.

He is her sole caretaker. Now, he’s left without a way for them to get around.

Dave Clarence Webster bought his truck in 2023. Around Dec. 1, he got a notice on the truck. He didn’t know that would mean they wouldn’t have the car they need for over 40 days now.

4 charged in Oakland County hyperbaric chamber explosion death to appear in court

The four workers charged after a 5-year-old boy was killed in a hyperbaric chamber explosion at an Oakland County health care center are scheduled to appear in court Monday as their preliminary examination resumes.

Tamela Peterson, 59, of Brighton, Jeffrey Mosteller, 65, of Clinton Township, Gary Marken, 66, of Spring Arbor and Aleta Moffitt, 61, of Rochester Hills, were charged after Thomas Cooper was killed when the hyperbaric chamber he was receiving treatment in exploded at the Oxford Center in Troy on Jan. 31, 2025. The boy’s mother was also injured in the explosion.

Michigan Lt. Gov. Gilchrist withdraws from gubernatorial race, announces run for Secretary of State

Michigan Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist announced he withdrew his name from the 2026 gubernatorial race. Instead, he’s running for Secretary of State.

In a video posted on Jan. 12, 2026, Gilchrist announced he is no longer running for governor but instead for secretary of state. It’s not immediately clear why he made the decision.
