Here’s how Michigan voters feel about Trump’s handling of the economy, according to poll

WDIV/Detroit News poll finds that voters believe Trump’s economic policies made nation’s economy weaker over the past year

Michigan voters were asked in a recent poll how they felt about President Donald Trump’s second term so far, specifically about his economic policies.

A poll conducted by WDIV/Detroit News asked voters from across the state about their opinions on various topics in the 2026 election. A portion of those questions focused on President Donald Trump’s work during his second term.

Here’s the exact wording of the question, which was asked over the phone: Would you say that Donald Trump’s economic policies over the past year have made the nation’s economy stronger, weaker or would you say they have had no impact on the nation’s economy?

Here are the results:

  • Stronger: 38.1%
  • Weaker: 48.3%
  • No impact: 9.7%
  • Don’t Know/ Refused: 3.8%

Here’s the exact wording of the next question, which was asked over the phone: And what about you personally, would you say Donald Trump’s economic policies over the past year have made you financially stronger, financially weaker or would you say they have had no impact on you financially?

Here are the results:

  • Stronger: 25.7%
  • Weaker: 33.5%
  • No impact: 38.9%
  • Don’t Know/Refused: 1.8%

Here’s the exact wording of the next question, which was asked over the phone: If you had to give a grade to President Trump on his performance handling the economy over the past year, would you give him an A, B, C, D or F?

Here are the results:

  • A: 16.3%
  • B: 21.9%
  • C: 17.2%
  • D: 11.6%
  • F: 32.0%
  • Don’t Know/ Refused/Other: 1.0%

Here’s the exact wording of the next question, which was asked over the phone: Generally speaking, would you say the price you pay for things have gone up in the past year, down in the past year, or stayed about the same?

  • Gone up: 64.0%
  • Gone down: 13.0%
  • Stayed about the same: 22.3%
  • Other/ Don’t Know/ Refused: 0.7%

Poll methodology

WDIV and the Detroit News commissioned a survey of likely November 2026 general election voters within the state of Michigan. The poll was conducted by The Glengariff Group, Inc.

It was a 600-sample, live-operator telephone survey conducted from Jan. 2-6, 2026.

The margin of error is +/- 4.0%, and there is a 95% level of confidence.

Of the respondents, 16.3% were called via landline telephone, and 83.7% were called on a cellphone.
