First responders rescue man in diabetic shock on Upper Peninsula ski trail

Search launched after skier fails to return in freezing conditions

MARQUETTE, Mich. – First responders sprang into action after a 64-year-old man skiing with friends in Marquette County disappeared from his group.

The man did not return to the parking lot as expected, prompting his friends to call 911.

According to authorities, search crews rushed out into the bitter cold, where temperatures dropped to 27 below zero, to find him.

They discovered the man face down in the snow, unconscious but still breathing.

Michigan State Police and Marquette County Search and Rescue said the man was in diabetic shock.

First responders quickly moved the man onto a sled, then transferred him to a snowmobile, and took him to a hospital.

The man is currently recovering at the hospital and is expected to survive.
