I ‘burp’ my house. What that means and why you should do it, too

Residents in West Village, living near the Riverview Health & Rehab Center on Jefferson Avenue, said they have been dealing with loud noise from a temporary boiler installed outside the facility.

DTE Energy ordered to pay $100M for Clean Air Act violations at Zug Island facility

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan has ordered DTE Energy Co. and three of its subsidiaries to comply with the Clean Air Act and pay a $100 million penalty for violations at the EES Coke Battery facility located on Zug Island between River Rouge and Detroit.

The facility, which produces metallurgical coke used in steelmaking, is situated in an area that fails to meet federal sulfur dioxide (SO2) air quality standards. The court found that changes made to the facility’s state air permit in 2014 led to a significant increase in SO2 pollution. For instance, the facility emitted over 3,200 tons of SO2 in 2018, exceeding permitted baseline levels of under 2,100 tons annually.

A judge called the omissions in the arrest warrant for Sherrone Moore “misleading” and granted the defense team’s request for an evidentiary hearing.

A motion hearing was held before Washtenaw County Judge Cedric Simpson on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Moore’s attorney, Ellen Michaels, argued that omissions in the warrant application warrant a Franks hearing, which is an evidentiary proceeding used to determine whether false statements or reckless omissions were made in securing an arrest warrant.
