Chemical exposure at St. Clair County home leaves 2 dead

First responders had to be decontaminated after responding to home

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. – Two men working on a well at a home in St. Clair County have died after being exposed to chemicals.

Deputies from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home on Cribbins Road near Bryce Road in Clyde Township on Feb. 17 just before 12 p.m. for a report of two unconscious men in the area.

When deputies arrived, they immediately detected a chemical odor in the area.

A 20-year-old man from Riley Township and a 21-year-old man from Clyde Township were taken to a hospital in Metro Detroit, where they were later pronounced dead due to exposure to hydrogen sulfide.

According to officials, the two men were working on a well at the recently purchased home.

Multiple first responders were decontaminated at the hospital due to chemical exposure.
