Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib introduced legislation to expand Head Start to reach 11 million eligible children nationwide.
She explained that many people think Head Start is just about school, but it actually provides much more support for children and their families.
“From birth to five years old is one of the most critical times for our kids, and they need to be able to thrive, and Head Start has proven over and over again. It is not just for our kids, it is bringing the whole family into the development of the child,” Tlaib said.
After speaking with parents, Tlaib saw firsthand how much the program truly matters. Arika Pore, MiSide Policy Council Chair and Head Start parent, said, “I can confidently say that my child has progressed beyond statistical measures.”
The bill does more than fully fund Head Start. It also proposes matching program hours to working hours, boosting educator pay, and investing in mental health services.
“We have a proven, successful program; it’s an anti-poverty program. It’s helping our families get these wrap-around services that we never get to see again in the traditional school setting,” Tlaib said.
Tlaib is not fighting alone. She has the support of multiple organizations, including the Wayne Metro Community Action Agency and Mothering Justice.
Terrell Couch, director of public affairs for Mothering Justice, said, “When we come together as policymakers, as parents, as advocates, we know we can ground policy in what really matters in community, in learning, in growth.”
Everyone involved expressed strong passion for the legislation and said they will continue to fight for its passage.
