Designer belt purchase in west Michigan leads to discovery of $35K counterfeit cash

PINE GROVE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The purchase of a belt on Michigan’s west side led to the discovery of more than $35,000 in counterfeit bills and two arrests.

According to authorities, Michigan State Police troopers were alerted to a counterfeiting complaint after two men reportedly used fake bills to purchase a designer belt sold over Facebook Marketplace.

It happened in Pine Grove Township, a suburb of Kalamazoo.

Police said they managed to find the location of the two men at a nearby home, where they were taken into custody.

More than $36,000 in counterfeit $100 bills were seized.

Photos released by police show the bills stamped with the phrases “For Motion Picture Purposes” and “Not Legal Tender.”

An 18-year-old man was arrested for possession of counterfeit bills and uttering and publishing.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on an unrelated warrant.
