MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A Macomb County man has been sentenced after being convicted of severely abusing his ex-girlfriend’s 8-month-old boy.

Vincent Zappa, 26, of Warren, was sentenced on Thursday, Feb. 26, to 216-360 months (18-30 years) in the Michigan Department of Corrections on one count of first-degree child abuse, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

In addition to his prison term, Zappa is prohibited from having any contact with the victim or the victim’s family. He is also required to register under Wyatt’s Law, a database that tracks people convicted of crimes against children.

On Oct. 23, 2024, Zappa was babysitting his then-girlfriend’s 8-month-old baby boy while she was at work.

The prosecutor’s office said Zappa called 911, reporting that the baby wasn’t behaving normally.

The baby was then taken to the hospital.

The child was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. During the trial, jurors heard medical testimony outlining the extent of the infant’s injuries.

Doctors determined the child suffered a severe acute subdural hematoma (a significant brain bleed) along with more than 100 retinal hemorrhages in both eyes, widespread bruising across his body, and blood coming from his mouth.

Prosecutors presented testimony from multiple physicians who detailed both the severity of the trauma and the long-term impact such injuries can have on a child.

After reviewing the evidence, the jury convicted Zappa of first-degree child abuse.

“I want to recognize the tireless efforts of law enforcement, the medical professionals who provided lifesaving care and testimony, and the jury for ensuring accountability in this case,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. “My office exists to protect the innocent and to speak for children who cannot speak for themselves. We will relentlessly pursue justice against those who abuse and endanger our most vulnerable members of the community.”
