DETROIT – This week, as Michigan’s weather continues to bounce violently between frigid winter and beautiful spring, we’ve been covering a story that our viewers know all too well.
Potholes.

It’s Michigan. We know what’s coming every time the snow thaws. But this year, the response to our stories has been even stronger.
What we’ve done so far
First, we took a look at the problems facing Michigan’s gravel roads. The ground is still in the freeze-thaw cycle and the soil under those roads is partly frozen. So water from melton snow and rain has nowhere to drain.
As the water sits in and under the surface, it turns the road soft and muddy, so every car digs the ruts and potholes a little deeper.
Dirt roads aren’t the only problem, though. On Thursday, Local 4 went out to Huron Road in Huron Township after frustrated neighbors reached out about the conditions.
“They must have known you were coming because they wanted to go ahead and throw some dirt on there to make it look like they did something,” resident Shelley told us.
We spoke to Darrell Cass, the chair of the Local Road Research Program, on Local 4 Live to talk about a recently launched program exploring ways to extend pavement life.
But right now, drivers in Metro Detroit are frustrated by the conditions, as they are every year. And we want to keep covering this issue and finding answers.
