As part of National Consumer Protection Week, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is highlighting the work of the Department’s Consumer Protection Team and the most common complaints submitted by residents in 2025.
The Consumer Protection Team works closely with organizations like the Better Business Bureau, Federal Trade Commission, and AARP to educate Michigan residents about scams, data breaches, and other consumer issues.

Last year, the team received more than 12,000 consumer complaints and enforced protections under laws like the Michigan Consumer Protection Act (MCPA).
In many cases, violations of the MCPA result in financial losses for consumers, such as payments for products or services that were never delivered. In 2025, the Department recovered $1.88 million for Michigan consumers and businesses through complaint mediation, settlements, and refunds.
“The Consumer Protection Team does an outstanding job protecting residents across our state,” said Nessel. “They work diligently to stay ahead of the latest scams and alert the public of new tactics scammers use to try to steal their hard-earned money. Through this work, my office has recouped nearly $2 million for Michigan and consumers last year alone while holding bad actors accountable. I could not be prouder of their dedication and the real difference they make every day.”
