Coast Guard opens icebreaking path to Mackinac Island

Icebreaking operations to begin March 24 to keep shipping lanes open

LAKE HURON, Mich. – The U.S. Coast Guard began opening a navigation path to Mackinac Island from St. Ignace, Michigan, to clear ice on Lake Huron.

Coast Guard Cutter Mobile Bay is set to begin icebreaking operations Tuesday, March 24, to keep the shipping channel passable between the two communities.

Residents were reminded that no ice is safe ice and to stay clear of shipping channels during the operation.
