67-year-old male dies after falling through the ice

TAWAS CITY, Mich. – An ice fisher has passed away after falling through the ice while attempting to return to shore. The fisher drowned in Iosco County, which is 35 miles east of West Branch.

On Monday, Tawas City Police Department arrived at the scene at around 2:40 p.m. to respond to a report about a medical emergency. While on the drive to the scene, police were updated the report was a drowning.

71-year-old male from National City and a 67-year-old male from Whittemore were ice fishing on an old quarry on the southeast side of the intersection between National City Road and Alabaster.

Both men fell through the ice multiple times while trying to get to shore.

Police initiated rescue operations upon arrival. The 67-year-old male was declared dead at the scene. The 71-year-old male was rescued and transported to a nearby hospital, MyMichigan Medical Center, for treatment.

The accident remains under investigation.
