LAPEER COUNTY, Mich. – A 31-acre grass fire destroyed a barn in Lapeer County.

The incident occurred on Thursday, March 25, at 6:12 p.m., prompting the city of Lapeer Fire & Rescue to dispatch to the 5100 block of McDowell Road in Oregon Township for a reported barn fire.

Police said the first unit arrived on scene at 6:23 p.m.

Upon arrival, crews said they found a working grass and vegetation fire that had already spread to a barn, which was fully involved.

Firefighters said they initiated suppression efforts and worked to contain the fire as it spread across the open land.

Officials said the fire was contained at approximately 6:50 p.m.

The incident burned approximately 31 acres and resulted in the total loss of the barn.

Firefighters remained on scene, conducting an overhaul and extinguishing hot spots until approximately 8:18 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

There were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries.

City of Lapeer Fire & Rescue was assisted on scene by the Elba Township Fire Department, Marathon Fire Authority (Columbiaville Fire Department), and Davison-Richfield Fire Department.

Lapeer County EMS was on scene for firefighter rehabilitation, and Lapeer County Central Dispatch coordinated communications.

This incident is a reminder of how quickly fires can spread in grass and open areas, especially when access is limited.

Residents are urged to call 911 immediately if they encounter a fire.
