STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A Sterling Heights woman says the company she hired to help restore her home after a 2023 fire left her with more heartache than help — losing irreplaceable items and delivering boxes that didn’t even belong to her.
“I don’t trust anybody anymore. My trust in people has completely been crushed,” said Mary Kay Wagner.
The last few years have been anything but normal for Wagner.
After her Sterling Heights home caught fire in 2023, she hired MJ White and Son Restoration to clean up and help get her home back. But she says the items she entrusted to the company got lost along the way.
“I don’t understand why they’ve done this. I paid them,” Wagner said.
Among the missing items is a painting of her children, grandchildren and late husband — a Christmas gift she says is priceless.
“It’s the only thing with all of us in it and it looked like in the fire it had melted and they took that. I have not heard one word if it’s been restored. If it’s restorable. That was very expensive and means a lot to me and my kids,” Wagner said.
She said she has called the company dozens of times to sort things out, but has received no help.
“They have not done what they said they were going to do in the entirety,” Wagner said.
WDIV called MJ White and Son Restoration three times, shared Wagner’s information, and was told a call back was coming — but it never came. A visit to the company’s Novi location also turned up little.
“They’ve not been helpful, they’ve not been kind, and they don’t have to be, but I expect all my stuff back,” Wagner said.
