WARREN, Mich. – A 31-year-old man has pleaded no contest to multiple charges after fleeing from a police vehicle in Macomb County

On Dec. 16, 2025, Otez Coil was driving erratically and at excessive speeds while heading southbound on Van Dyke, police said. Coil disregarded police officers when they attempted to stop him.

Coil crashed into the guardrail while turning onto 11 Mile Road. He then exited the vehicle and removed his 9-year-old son, holding the child as officers approached him.

On March 30, at a pretrial conference, Coil plead no contest several charges including a second-degree charge of fleeing a police officer and a vehicle code, a 10-year felony. Coil is a habitual offender on his third offense notice, which doubles the penalty to 20 years.

In addition, he pled no contest to a fourth-degree charge of child abuse, a one-year misdemeanor, and operating while intoxicated, a 93-day misdemeanor.

As part of his plea agreement, Coil’s charge of driving with a suspended license, a 93-day misdemeanor, will be dismissed upon sentencing.

Coil is scheduled to be sentenced before Judge Viviano on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 8:30 a.m.

“As I have repeatedly stated, fleeing from law enforcement is extremely dangerous, to the public and to the police attempting to enforce the law. We have seen so many incidents of innocent individuals killed by drivers fleeing from police. This case is additionally troubling because the defendant’s child was in the vehicle. We are grateful that the child was not injured,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said.
