DETROIT – Sunday’s sunshine set the perfect backdrop for Mother’s Day celebrations across the area, with families gathering to honor the women who give so much throughout the year.

Brunch, surprises treat local moms

From sitting down for brunch to winning special contests, moms were being treated all day long. Joi Morgan was out celebrating with multiple generations of her family.

“I’m here with my daughter, and then I’m here with my mom,” Morgan said.

A few lucky families also walked away as Local 4 Mother’s Day contest winners. Kathy Leavitt could hardly contain her excitement.

“I’m so surprised. I’m so happy. I mean they’re just the best. They really are,” Leavitt said.

Fellow winner Rhonda Cenance was equally thrilled with the experience.

“Delicious. Everything was delicious and fresh,” Cenance said.

Sons, daughters show gratitude for mom’s sacrifices

For many children, Mother’s Day is a chance to give back — even just a little — for everything their moms have done. Jordan Gant took his mother out to show her just how much she means to him.

“She brings me all the joy in the world. She has done everything for me in my life and I just can pay her back in whatever I can,” Gant said.

His mother, Nikiya Gross, said the bond they share speaks for itself.

“He loves his mom and I know I love him, so we definitely have a special bond,” Gross said.

Moms say the hard work is ‘worth it’

Being a mom is no easy task, but the women celebrating Sunday made clear they wouldn’t have it any other way. Morgan reflected on the realities of motherhood.

“Sometimes we’re tired and we need a break but just keep going. It’s all worth it in the end,” she said.

And while Mother’s Day comes once a year, Ashley Pearson had a reminder that appreciation doesn’t have to wait for a designated holiday.

“Celebrate yourself. Treat yourself. It doesn’t have to be a special occasion or special day either,” Pearson said.
