The American Red Cross has declared an emergency blood shortage for the summer.
In June, at the same time, the national blood supply dropped by 25%, while demand from hospitals rose to 3,500 units higher per week than expected.
The American Red Cross says that summer often means no school blood drives, busy schedules and seasonal illnesses.
Blood cannot be stockpiled and has a shelf life.
According to reports, a blood transfusion happens in the U.S every two seconds.
Deandra Smith with the American Red Cross Michigan Region joined Local 4 Live to talk about the shortage.
