Earl Joesph Larche III faces one count of felony carjacking. He was also given a third offense notice for being a habitual offender, police said.

Security cameras showed Larche enter a car while the victim was pumping gas at the BP gas station at 16054 Southfield Road. He attempted to drive away, but was stopped by a fuel tanker driver in the parking lot.

Larche was able to get away from the tanker driver by shedding two sweatshirts as he struggled with him, police said. Larche ran off on foot, but was apprehended in a little more than 24 hours in Detroit after police followed tips received when they released the surveillance video.

Police said the victim had locked the car but kept it running. Larche was able to open the door because the vehicle's key fob was close to the car.
