Michigan among top states for refugees, despite slowing U.S. support

The number of people displaced by war, persecution, or natural disasters is the highest it has been since the fall of the Berlin Wall and end of the Cold War, but the number of refugees that the United States resettles hasn't grown with it.

A new Pew Research Center analysis of United Nations and U.S. State Department has shown that the percentage of refugees the United States give assistance to is at a historic low of 0.2% of the growing refugee population.

The country with the largest population of those seeking asylum is Myanmar with almost 170,000 displaced citizens in the past 15 years. Iraq follows with 144,000. Children compose up to 50 percent of the exiled.

During this period, Michigan has ranked #8 in the country in terms of how many refugees it takes in and #4 for last year alone.

Michigan has consistently been accepting to those who chose to emigrate. From the "Michigan Fever" population boom of the 1800s, to the diverse cultural growth from those seeking the American Dream in the 1900s.

The MDHHS offers multiple federally funded services to those in need, making Michigan continue to be inviting to those displaced.
