Police arrest person of interest in fatal shooting of Warren couple

WARREN, Mich. – A person of interest is in custody after a couple was found dead Friday in a Warren home, police said.

Police are calling the deaths of a 67-year-old man and 66-year-old woman in a home on Panama Street, near 9 Mile Road, a homicide.

Police said Steven and Cynthia Collins were found at about 2:45 p.m. when police responded to a welfare check. A neighbor said the family's dog was loose and no one would answer the door, police said.

They were found shot to death in separate rooms, police said. They have lived at the home for several years.

Police believe they were killed in the early morning.

The couple's nephew, Joseph Lawrence Borowiak, 37, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. He was spotted walking near Ryan and McNichols roads in Detroit.

Police said someone recognized him from a news article and called police.

Neighbors said the couple raised Borowiak, and they recently kicked him out because of an issue.

"He lived there for quite a number of years on and off," Greg Birch, a friend of the couple, said. "He had substance abuse issues and other issues."
