Police: Wrong-way driver killed 2 in crash on Ryan Road in Sterling Heights

Police believe 73-year-old driver suffered medical condition

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A wrong-way driver caused a deadly crash Monday morning on Ryan Road north of 17 Mile Road in Sterling Heights.

Sterling Heights police believe a 73-year-old man may have suffered a medical condition that caused him to drive his 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound into the northbound lanes of Ryan Road. He and another driver both were killed in the crash which shut down the intersection of Ryan and 17 Mile roads for hours on Monday.

The 73-year-old man was traveling at a high rate of speed when he struck the passenger side of a 2017 Lincoln MKZ driven by a 56-year-old woman, police said. His vehicle hit a 2016 Chrysler Town and Country head-on before going airborne and hitting the driver’s side roof. The driver of the Jeep was ejected while the vehicle was airborne. It landed on its roof.

Both the man driving the Jeep and the 43-year-old woman driving the Town and Country were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Lincoln was treated for minor injuries by the Sterling Heights Fire Department, but refused transportation to the hospital.

It is unclear if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, Sterling Heights police said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Sterling Heights Traffic Safety Bureau at 586-446-2920.
