The mayor's criticism of the federal response prompted the president to respond in a series of tweets.

Trump tweeted that Cruz was "told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump."

He added, "Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help."

The president went on to praise the military and first responders before taking shots at the media, posting that "fake news CNN and NBC are going out of their way to disparage our great First Responders."
