Suspected drunken driver swerves into I-75 Rouge River bridge construction site in Detroit

Crews spent Sunday morning removing vehicle

DETROIT – Northbound I-75 at Fort Street was closed Sunday morning while crews removed an SUV that careened into the construction site on southbound I-75 and got stuck.

A security guard saw the SUV drive into the Rouge River bridge construction site. It missed hitting the guard, porta-potties, and barrels before crashing into newly laid corrugated metal sheeting.

If the metal sheets, which are placed down before concrete is poured, the car would have crashed down onto Fort Street.

Police said the driver was drunk.

Officials said the crash caused about $50,000 worth of damage. The crash site will need to be repaired, but the project isn't expected to be delayed.
