MSP: Pursuit ensued when driver of ATV refused to stop

DETROIT – A teenager is dead after a crash Saturday in Detroit, Michigan State Police said.

The fatal crash happened around 5:30 p.m. at Rossini Drive and Gratiot Avenue.

MSP said the preliminary investigation revealed troopers assigned to Metro South Post, Detroit Secure Cities Partnership attempted to stop an ATV four wheeler for reckless driving.

The troopers activated their emergency lights and sirens and attempted to stop the ATV. MSP said the driver of the ATV refused to stop and a pursuit ensued.

The troopers pursued the ATV east on Rossini Drive. MSP said as the ATV approached Gratiot Avenue, the driver attempted to drive off the roadway and onto the sidewalk and lost control, crashing into the rear-end of a pickup truck.

Troopers began first aid on the suspect and called for emergency medical services, which arrived and took the driver to St. John's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, MSP said.

The driver was identified by MSP as a 15-year-old boy.

MSP said detectives from the Second District, Special Investigation Section and the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Investigation Section are continuing to investigate the crash.
