WESTLAND, Mich. – When you think small and cuddly, most people don't think of rats.
In fact many people have negative images when it comes to rats.

And because of that stigma, they are often overlooked when families come into the Michigan Humane Society looking for a new best friend, even though they make superb family pets.
In order to help more of these intelligent, social creatures find their forever homes, MHS will host "Oh, Rats!" – a rat adoption event, at the Berman Center for Animal Care in Westland on Saturday, March 24, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
"Not everyone knows that the Michigan Humane Society has more than just cats and dogs available for adoption," said Linda Reider, MHS Director of Animal Welfare. "Rats are highly intelligent animals who love to interact with humans and make wonderful, lower-maintenance pets. We're hoping we can help find homes for at least 12 friendly rats that we're caring for here at MHS right now."
At the event, rat experts and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and to set up meet and greets.
Rats are highly social animals and are encouraged to be adopted in pairs or even groups.
Adoption fees are $10 for a single rat, $15 for a pair or $20 for three. The price includes age-appropriate vaccinations, a free veterinary visit at any of MHS' three veterinary clinics within 10 days of adoption, a basket filled with treats, rat chow and other goodies, and much more!
Rats can be taught their own name, come when called, and learn to do tricks.
They generally like to be handled and must be provided with an appropriate enclosure, bedding, and a ready supply of toys!
