He had been placed on the IL with a right shoulder strain July 15.

Sewald completed rehab assignments with both High-A West Michigan and Triple-A Toledo. He pitched a total of 4.2 innings and surrendered just one earned run and struck out 4 batters.

The Tigers have announced he has been activated off the 60-day injured list and will be available for Thursday afternoon’s game vs. the Cleveland Guardians.

Sewald features a low 90s four-seam fastball, and a low 80s sweeping slider with a 37.2% whiff rate. In 2025 with the Cleveland Guardians, he pitched a total of 15.1 innings and posted a 4.70 ERA with a 29% strikeout rate.

Sewald brings bullpen depth, a veteran presence, and postseason experience including World Series experience with the 2023 Arizona Diamondbacks, where he posted a 5.40 ERA and struck out 16 batters in 10 innings.

The corresponding moves: Jose Urquidy has been designated for assignment (the club expects to option him to Toledo tomorrow, Sept 19), and Codi Heuer has been granted release.
