DETROIT – Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams said he didn’t know he would get a penalty for straddling the goalpost after a touchdown against the Eagles.

Williams scored the Lions’ only touchdown in Philadelphia and then ran to the goal post and briefly straddled it, drawing an immediate flag.

He got hit with a 15-yard penalty that pushed back the Lions’ extra-point attempt, which kicker Jake Bates ultimately missed.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, he said he didn’t realize the celebration was a penalty until he’d already taken a seat on the bench.

“I didn’t know it was a penalty until I sat down and saw the field-goal team running out,” Williams said.

He added that he apologized to punter Jack Fox, Bates, and head coach Dan Campbell.

According to Williams, Campbell told him, “Good play, just don’t do it again.”

Williams said the team has moved past the moment and is focused on their next matchup against the New York Giants.

“We just have to make plays and be smarter,” Williams said.

Jamo has been taking advantage of his touches lately, scoring touchdowns in each of the last three games.
