Carlisle, 66, who is one win away from the 1,000th of his coaching career, spoke highly of Bickerstaff as his replacement, saying the Pistons leading man was trusted and a proven leader.

Carlisle also praised Bickerstaff’s work with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he led the team from a lottery position to playoff success.

“The job he’s done in Detroit the last year and a half speaks for itself. He’s a great leader and a passionate guy for coaches,” said Carlisle.

Bickerstaff, 46, began his coaching career as an assistant with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2004.

He served as associate head coach with the Memphis Grizzlies before becoming interim head coach in November 2017, then was named head coach in May 2018.

In February 2020, Bickerstaff was promoted to head coach of the Cavaliers after former Michigan Wolverines head coach John Beilein resigned.

Bickerstaff was hired as the Pistons’ head coach on July 3, 2024.

After leading them to the playoffs last season, Bickerstaff now has the Pistons as the best team in the Eastern Conference, with a 22-6 record, ahead of their matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Carlisle, who also coached the Pistons from 2001-2003, congratulated Bickerstaff on his new role, calling it a “life-changing experience.”

Bickerstaff’s father, Bernie, 81, is a longtime NBA coach and executive.

Carlisle expressed support for Bernie Bickerstaff’s recognition in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

“We’re behind the scenes working trying to help Bernie be recognized by the Hall of Fame as a contributor,” Carlisle said. “There are so many ways that he influenced the game.”
